A BoE Scenario
by Brett Bixler

This scenario, written for the short design contest in December 1999, is designed for very high-level parties (30+ levels per person). Start the adventure with a substantial amount of gold.

There is a given and a hidden mission in this scenario. The hidden mission is not revealed until towards the end of the scenario, and your actions up to that point dictate if it can be accomplished.

There are multiple paths to accomplishing your given mission. As this is a time-based scenario always look for the shortest route, but keep in mind the shortest route is not always the best!

I've done my best to make certain environmental 'givens' in BoE act differently; not for the sake of doing so, but because it fits the storyline. This is a scenario of attrition; only the smartest players will survive! Stock up before you leave. Assume nothing. If you rest too much, you will definitely lose.

Please Consider...
If you like this game, please consider making a small donation to your local literacy council. Even five dollars goes a long way with these organizations. They are underfunded, rely on volunteers, and fulfill an important need in our society.

Spoilers (scroll down)

There are several way to get to and from the mission's goal - a tower located to the northeast of your starting location.

1. Travel the entire way by foot and by boat, retracing the original expedition's path.

2. After finding the journal of the cartographer early in Sector 2, you can return to Sector 1, eastern mountains. There you will find a hidden mountain pass that will take you to Sector 4. This is a one-way journey! You will skip most of Sector 2, and all of Sector 3 this way. Watch out for falling boulders!

3. In Sector 2, in a cave you will find a triangular-shaped device. Carry this with you to Sector 3. There you will find a tower that contains a power boat. If you have the triangular-shaped device, you can take a quick ride in the power boat to Sector 4. The device will then melt. If you end up in Sector 4 without using the device, it can be used to quickly travel to Sector 3, one-way.

4. If you follow the original expedition's route (Sector 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) you will find a cave/lair in each sector with a mysterious circle of metal. Activate all these circles. Also, make sure you create a strange card in a factory in Sector 2. Then, after you reach Sector 6 and 'acquire your target,' you can use the card to activate a teleporter that will carry you back through the sectors (5, 4, 3, 2, 1). If you didn't activate a circle in a particular sector, your journey will end there, and you must continue on foot.

5. If you complete the hidden misson, you will be able to enter a military complex in Sector 4, in the western mountains. If you survive the journey through it, you will end up in the eastern part of Sector 1. This can save you much time on the return journey.

Which way is the best? To complete the hidden mission, you must travel through Sectors 4 and 5. See #2 for the first leg of the trip, and #5 for the return leg. To retrieve a very special item, you must travel through the hidden mountain pass and find two other special items. See #2 and "Opening the Sealed Door in ARDCC's Tower" below for more information.

Getting the Strange Card

This is probably the toughest puzzle in this scenario.

You must activate the four machines in a timed sequence. Active the upper, left machine first. Twenty turns later, activate the upper, right machine. On turn 35, activate the lower, right machine. Activate the last machine on turn 39. Doing this will place all the raw materials for the card on the same belt. Several turns later, the card will appear.

Opening the Sealed Door in ARDCC's Tower

You need two square-shaped devices. Both are found in the Ice Roach lair, which is in the hidden Mountain Pass is Sector 1. You must read William's Journal in Sector 2, then backtrack to the east side of Sector 1 to find the hidden Mountain Pass. Behind the sealed door is the Tome of the Grot, a bonus item the Empire will give you big bucks for.
